Great Northern Carousel presented Queen City Ballet’s “Swan Lake” on July 7th and 8th, at the Helena Middle School.
“Swan Lake” is the most popular of all classical ballets. From its first incarnation in 1877 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow to the many Productions mounted around the globe today, this timeless story of a young man’s love and eventual betrayal of a swan queen, set to one of Tchaikovsky’s most enduring scores, continues to engage audiences and inspire new generations of dancers.
From the evil magician Von Rotbart played by Blair Bybee (Grandstreet’s Artistic Director) to Prince Siegfried danced by David Armendariz of David Taylor Dance Theater and Odette, Kelly Schaefer of David Taylor Dance Theater, this 123 year-old ballet will be a chance for Helena audiences to enjoy the splendor of an age old work. Along with these professionals Serena Mackay from Atlanta Ballet will again grace the Helena Middle School stage with her ever-delightful presence.
The combination of these talents and the award willing Queen City Ballet students will certainly create a production of Swan Lake that Helena has come to expect from QCB.
Campbell Pryor artistic director of Queen City Ballet recently returned from China where she was a guest teacher at the prestigious Shanghai Ballet Company. While in China Campbell was able to collaborate with teachers, students and XIN Lili the Artistic Director of the Shanghai Ballet, bringing home exciting new ideas for this summer’s performance. “Traveling to China and working with their professional company has recharged my artistic energy and I look forward to working along side Steve Brule (formerly of Houston Ballet) in presenting the grace and beauty of Swan Lake”.
